Its construction began in 1341 at the request of Niccolò Acciaiuoli (a politician Andrea del Castagno included in his Portraits of Illustrious Florentines).
The Certosa grew and prospered following Acciaiuoli's death. During Napolonic occupation, the monastery was sacked and more than 500 artworks disappeared (only a limited number has been recovered).
